What is Ethena Pay Earn+ and how does it work?
Earn+ is an optional second dollar balance in the Ethena Pay app that targets a higher reward rate than the Main balance. Steakhouse Financial runs a looped USDe position on Aave behind it, and Upshift runs the vault that holds the deposits.
What is Ethena Pay Earn+?
Ethena Pay Earn+ is an optional balance in the Ethena Pay money app. It moves a user's dollars into an external onchain vault for a higher target reward rate. Ethena Pay launched it on 28 October 2026 at up to 12% APY, against up to 6% on the Main balance. There's no lockup, rewards aren't guaranteed, and withdrawals are paid within 24 hours.
Earn+ opened first to Pro and VIP users. Ethena Pay said on X the same day that it would reach every user in the coming days.
Earn+ sits next to the Main balance in Ethena Pay
Ethena Pay launched on 3 September 2026 as Ethena's "internet money app" for saving, sending and spending dollars. Balances in the app are held in USDe, Ethena's synthetic dollar, and the Main balance (the USD Account) earns a reward rate by default. The Ethena Pay pricing page sets that rate at up to 6% a year, made up of the underlying USDe rate plus a Daily Boost that Ethena Pay adds on top.
Earn+ takes an extra step. The first time a user opens the Earn+ page, they accept the Earn+ terms and risk disclosures. After that they pick an amount from the USD Account and confirm it. The money moves into the vault straight away. Rewards are added to the Earn+ balance once a day, and money in Earn+ doesn't earn the Daily Boost.
How the Earn+ strategy loops USDe on Aave
The Earn+ vault takes in USDe and passes it to a strategy run by Steakhouse Financial. Steakhouse runs it on Avalanche. According to Ethena Pay's Earn+ launch post, the strategy supplies USDe as collateral to an Aave v4 market on Avalanche, borrows USDT against it, buys more USDe with the USDT and repeats the cycle. Ethena Pay says the loop targets a ratio of about 11x.
It works a bit like buying a rental flat with a mortgage. The rent is the USDe reward earned on the whole position, the mortgage payment is the interest on the borrowed USDT, and the owner keeps whatever is left after the bank is paid.
The position earns USDe rewards on everything it holds and pays interest only on what it borrowed. While the reward rate sits above the USDT borrow rate, each extra loop adds return. When borrowing gets more expensive, Steakhouse shrinks the loop. Guy Young, Ethena's founder, described Earn+ on X on 28 October 2026 as "a one-click access point to optimized levered USDe rewards ... with no management of debt positions required at all."
A dollar moved into Earn+ goes from the Ethena Pay app to the Upshift vault, then to the Steakhouse strategy account, and then into the Ethena Ecosystem Spoke on Aave v4 on Avalanche. There, USDe goes in as collateral and USDT comes out as a loan, which is swapped back into USDe and supplied again. Rewards travel back up the same path to the Earn+ balance.
The Earn+ position on 29 October 2026
The vault behind Earn+ is called Ethena USD+ and runs on Avalanche at 0x6AaB14C53980B9aA1Ce632a7e46a6E5E62e60f55. At 13:09 UTC on 29 October 2026 it held about 3.58M USDe, after 97 deposits from 65 wallets between 27 and 29 October. The strategy position on the Ethena Ecosystem Spoke held about 6.34M USDe supplied against about 3.14M USDT borrowed.
That position had a health factor of about 1.88. A health factor measures how far a borrowing position sits from liquidation, and Aave's v4 documentation makes a position eligible for liquidation once it drops below 1.0.
How Earn+ compares with the Main balance
Main balance (USD Account) | Earn+ | |
Headline rate | Up to 6% a year | Up to 12% APY at launch |
Source of the return | Underlying USDe rate plus Ethena Pay's Daily Boost | USDe rewards on a looped position, minus USDT borrowing cost |
Where the money sits | The user's self-custodial Ethena Pay balance | An external vault run by Upshift, with the strategy run by Steakhouse |
Per-user limit | Boost paid on balances up to $5,000, $100,000 or $1,000,000 by tier | $20,000 Standard, $50,000 Pro, $200,000 VIP |
Lockup | None | None; withdrawals paid within 24 hours |
Ethena Pay fee to move money in or out | None | None |
Rates, tiers and limits are from the Ethena Pay pricing page, FAQ and Earn+ launch post as of 29 October 2026. Ethena Pay says rewards on both balances can change, including going down.
The companies that run Earn+
The Ethena Pay FAQ calls Earn+ a third-party product: "When you use Earn+, you are moving your money to an external vault service run by Upshift and Steakhouse." Ethena Pay only provides the interface. It doesn't custody, manage or guarantee the assets in Earn+. A user accepts Upshift's terms of use and Steakhouse's terms before the first deposit.
Upshift runs the vault contract. It takes USDe deposits from the app, issues vault shares whose value rises as the strategy earns, values Steakhouse's Aave position to set the share price and processes withdrawals. A multisig holds the vault's owner role. Upshift's contracts have been through 11 smart contract audits by 6 independent firms, and it runs 50+ vaults across 30+ chains.
Steakhouse Financial runs the strategy from its own account connected to the vault. It describes itself as "the credit stack for the stablecoin economy" and showed $4.59B in noncustodial assets supplied on its site on 29 October 2026.
Earn+ limits, fees and withdrawal times
- Per-user limit. $20,000 for Standard, $50,000 for Pro and $200,000 for VIP accounts.
- Vault-wide limit. $4.5M across all users at launch, which Ethena Pay says it will raise as the cap fills.
- Fees. Ethena Pay charges nothing to add money to Earn+ or take it out.
- Deposits land instantly.
- Withdrawals are processed within 24 hours and paid into the USD Account, and the app marks a slower one as processing until it arrives.
The risks that come with Earn+
Ethena Pay's FAQ says a user could lose some or all of the money moved into Earn+, and that Earn+ isn't a bank deposit or covered by the FDIC, SIPC or any other protection scheme. A looped USDe position adds risks that the Main balance doesn't carry:
- Borrowing cost. If the USDT borrow rate climbs above the USDe reward rate, Earn+ earns less than Main, or loses money, until Steakhouse resizes the loop.
- Liquidation. If the health factor falls below 1.0, liquidators can repay part of the USDT debt and take USDe collateral at a bonus.
- Exit price. Unwinding the loop means selling USDe for USDT, and the price at that moment lands on depositors.
- Smart contracts in the vault, Aave v4 and USDe itself.
The Earn+ safety guide walks through each risk with the numbers behind it. Always make sure to do your own research and be aware of the above and any other risks before depositing.
Frequently asked questions
Is Earn+ the same as staking USDe for sUSDe?
They're separate products. Staking USDe for sUSDe earns Ethena's discretionary staking rewards, which Ethena's docs say only rise or stay flat. Earn+ runs a borrowed position on Aave, which can earn more than plain USDe and can also lose money.
Can anyone use Earn+ outside the Ethena Pay app?
Ethena Pay says Earn+ is exclusive to Ethena Pay users and can't be reached onchain without an Ethena Pay account. The vault has no public deposit page.
What happens if a deposit goes over the Earn+ limit?
Ethena Pay declines it, and the money stays in the USD Account. Money already in Earn+ isn't affected and can still be withdrawn.
Does Earn+ pay the Daily Boost as well?
No. The Daily Boost applies only to the Main balance, and Ethena Pay pays it only to users who make at least one qualifying card purchase in the calendar month.
Which blockchain does Earn+ run on?
Avalanche. Ethena Pay is built on Avalanche, and the Earn+ vault and its Aave v4 position both sit there. Ethena Pay says the vault is set up to work across chains and protocols from day one.
Is money in Earn+ insured?
Ethena Pay says money in Earn+ isn't insured by the FDIC, SIPC or any deposit insurance scheme, and that it doesn't guarantee the rewards or the value of what users move in.
How do the rewards show up?
Rewards are added to the Earn+ balance once a day. The balance grows because each vault share converts into more USDe as the strategy earns.
