Several US banks that open accounts for crypto companies now run stablecoin rails next to their dollar accounts. Their charters decide what the FDIC covers.

About 150 institutional digital asset clients, including stablecoin issuers, exchanges and trading firms, bank with Western Alliance, according to the bank's 24 July 2026 launch of WA VenueX, its 24/7 dollar settlement network.

Crypto friendly banks for business in the US also include Cross River, Customers Bank, Lead Bank and Column, all FDIC-insured, plus Erebor, a national bank insured since February 2026. Anchorage Digital Bank holds a federal charter without FDIC-insured deposits, and Mercury is a fintech account on two partner banks. Outside the US, AMINA, Bank Frick and Banking Circle serve crypto and stablecoin businesses.

How we chose

Every pick opens accounts for crypto or stablecoin businesses and publishes what it offers, and every fact comes from the bank, a regulator or a dated news report, checked on 14 October 2026. Picks are grouped by type, with no overall ranking. The criteria were:

  • Charter: state bank, national bank, trust bank or fintech, and who supervises it.
  • Rails: 24/7 dollar transfers, stablecoin on and off ramps, and stablecoin settlement or issuance.
  • FDIC cover: whether deposits are FDIC-insured, and how far a sweep or for-benefit-of (FBO) account extends it.

Charters come from the FDIC BankFind database. Check each bank's history in the regulators' public enforcement search: the FDIC, the OCC and the Federal Reserve. Each search also shows whether an order is still active. General information, not legal advice.

Closed or out: Silvergate announced a voluntary wind-down on 8 March 2023, Signature Bank was closed by New York regulators on 12 March 2023, BankProv stopped lending to digital asset customers and was set to merge into Needham Bank on 15 November 2025, and Juno, a fintech account, posts a shutdown notice on its site.

The charter sets what the account can hold

A state or national bank takes deposits the FDIC insures to $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category, at each bank. A trust bank such as Anchorage holds assets in custody.

A fintech such as Mercury opens the account at a partner bank: its site says Mercury is "a fintech company, not an FDIC-insured bank", with banking through Choice Financial Group and Column N.A. The FDIC's crypto fact sheet adds that it "does not insure assets issued by non-bank entities, such as crypto companies". A stablecoin is an asset issued by a non-bank.

Cross River Bank: best for fintechs paying out in dollars and stablecoins from one core

Cross River launched stablecoin payments on 24 November 2025, built into COS, its real-time core, for settlement, payouts, on and off ramps and treasury. The bank says the service is live in limited states. It's also one of the initial banks to settle with Visa in USDC over Solana (16 December 2025).

Customers Bank: best for digital asset firms moving dollars between clients at weekends

Its cubiX platform runs 24/7/365 and names digital asset firms among its users. One public action bears on new products: under a Federal Reserve written agreement dated 5 August 2024, the bank must give the Reserve Bank 30 days' written notice before any new product, service or initiative tied to its digital asset strategy. The Fed's enforcement search shows whether the agreement is still active.

Lead Bank: best for card programs and payout companies

The Kansas City bank lists on and off ramps, stablecoin-backed cards and FX payouts, and it settles with Visa in USDC alongside Cross River.

Column N.A.: best for developer teams wanting stablecoins and bank accounts on one API

On 16 September 2026 Column added USDC and USDT to its core ledger, with Solana as the default network. Incoming coins convert to dollars, with transfers out over ACH, FedNow, Fedwire and SWIFT.

Western Alliance Bank: best for stablecoin issuers and trading firms

By July 2026 WA VenueX had processed billions of dollars of volume across stablecoin minting and redemption, digital asset settlement and liquidity rebalancing, and the bank holds over $90 billion in assets. The network is available to select digital asset clients.

Erebor Bank: best for crypto and tech companies wanting a new national bank

The OCC conditionally approved the national bank charter on 15 October 2025, and the FDIC board approved deposit insurance on 16 December 2025, subject to conditions that include initial paid-in capital of at least $276 million. The FDIC describes the business model as deposit and lending products for the technology, payment systems, investment and defense industries, including virtual currency market participants. BankFind lists it as insured from 6 February 2026.

Anchorage Digital Bank: best for custody and US-regulated stablecoin issuance

Anchorage issued USA₮ for Tether on 27 January 2026. It offers fiat custody through an FDIC-insured sub-custodian.

Mercury: best for startups wanting a business account with sweep cover

Mercury says its partner banks and their sweep networks provide up to $5 million of FDIC insurance on eligible deposits.

AMINA Bank: best for companies holding stablecoins with a Swiss bank

AMINA holds a FINMA banking and securities dealer licence and dropped USDC custody fees for Stablecoin Rewards Account clients in January 2025, with a regulated branch in Abu Dhabi.

Bank Frick: best for crypto custody and transfers under a MiCA licence

Liechtenstein's FMA granted Bank Frick a MiCA licence, and France's AMF lists it on its crypto white list for custody, order execution and transfers.

Banking Circle: best for payment companies settling in euros

Banking Circle launched EURI, a euro stablecoin under MiCA, on 26 August 2024.

Rails: 24/7 networks and stablecoin settlement

Wire and ACH transfers settle on business days, and the 24/7 networks move dollars between clients of the same bank at any hour. A payout company that funds weekend transfers needs one of those networks or stablecoin settlement, and our explainer on weekend payouts covers the options. A stablecoin issuer needs a bank that handles minting and redemption in volume. Ask each bank which coins and chains it supports (Column defaults to Solana, and Visa's first US bank participants settle over Solana).

FDIC cover on an FBO account

A fintech holding customer dollars at a sponsor bank usually uses an FBO account. The FDIC recognises each customer's share only if the relationship is disclosed in the bank's deposit account records (12 CFR 330.5). Our explainer on FBO accounts and who earns the interest covers the program agreement.

Regulatory history and a second bank

Silvergate announced on 3 March 2023 that it would discontinue the Silvergate Exchange Network (SEN), and announced its wind-down five days later. Signature was closed on 12 March, with the FDIC as receiver. In July 2024 the Fed fined Silvergate $43 million over its anti-money laundering transaction monitoring, after all deposits had been repaid. An open order can also limit new products, as the Customers Bank agreement above shows. Some firms keep a second account at a bank on a different network. Before signing, a buyer can ask each bank:

  • which network carries its 24/7 transfers, and whether that network reaches clients at other banks;
  • how long it takes to move a balance out if the account is closed;
  • whether any open enforcement order limits new digital asset products (the FDIC, OCC and Fed searches above list public orders);
  • which stablecoins and chains it supports for on and off ramps.

Idle USDC between on-ramp and payout

Banks can pay interest on dollar deposits, while USDC that sits in a custody wallet between the on-ramp and the payout earns nothing by default. A stablecoin vault can hold that balance and pay a return.

Upshift runs stablecoin vaults where asset managers and curators run the strategies, across three risk bands: Cash (T-bills and money market funds), Core (blue-chip lending) and Enhanced (market-neutral strategies). Most vaults use a 72-hour withdrawal period, and instant exit is available up to the vault's USDC buffer for a fee. Returns move with the market, and no yield is guaranteed.

Add stablecoin yield to your product, from 24/7 tokenized money market funds to DeFi. Banks considering the same idea for their own clients can read stablecoins for community and sponsor banks.
