Instant payment rails pay out on a Sunday, while the wires that refill a payment company's account stop on Friday evening. Stablecoin balances move on any day and can earn in a stablecoin vault until they're needed.

Imagine it's 11pm on a Saturday and 4,000 drivers on a delivery app tap cash out at once, for $1.2 million in total, against a bank account last topped up by wire on Friday afternoon. Payment service providers (PSPs) fund weekend payouts by getting the money in place before banks close: a Friday prefund, a credit line drawn ahead of the weekend, stablecoin top-ups that move on any day, or float held in a stablecoin vault with instant redemption up to its USDC buffer.

RTP, FedNow and Stripe Instant Payouts pay recipients on weekends, Visa is piloting stablecoin prefunding for Visa Direct, and Upshift stablecoin vaults earn on the Friday balance.

Why can a PSP pay out on a Sunday and still run short of cash?

The outgoing rails run all weekend. The Clearing House's RTP network settles payments 24/7/365 up to $10 million each, and FedNow runs every day of the year. The money a PSP sends has to sit in its account first. Most of what refills that account moves on business days. Fedwire, the Federal Reserve's wire system, runs 22 hours a day from Monday to Friday and closes at 7pm Eastern. RTP itself settles from a prefunded account at the New York Fed, and banks can only top that account up while Fedwire is open. Weekend RTP payments are capped at what a bank placed there by Friday, The Clearing House told the Fed in September 2024.

From Friday evening to Sunday night, payouts keep leaving while funding stops arriving. That window is about 50 hours long, and longer when a Monday is a bank holiday.

What runs between Friday noon and Monday noon, US Eastern time Timeline from Friday 12:00 to Monday 12:00 Eastern time. Fedwire, which carries the wires that refill a payment company bank account, closes at 7pm on Friday and reopens at 9pm on Sunday for the Monday business day, a gap of 50 hours. RTP and FedNow payouts run through the whole weekend. USDC transfers onchain run through the whole weekend. Instant redemption from an Upshift stablecoin vault is available through the whole weekend up to the vault's USDC buffer, for a fee. 50 hours with no Fedwire Fri 12:00 Sat 00:00 Sun 00:00 Mon 12:00 Fedwire wires in Open RTP and FedNow payouts out Open every hour USDC transfers onchain Open every hour Stablecoin vault Upshift, instant exit Up to the vault's USDC buffer, for a fee Fri 19:00 close Sun 21:00 open Fedwire hours per the Federal Reserve; each bank sets its own wire cutoff. Sundays are due to open in 2028 or 2029. Times are US Eastern.

The Federal Reserve said on 9 October 2025 that it will add Sundays and weekday holidays to Fedwire, with the change due in 2028 or 2029 and use voluntary for banks. Saturday stays closed under that plan. Mastercard said on 3 June 2026 that it plans to offer issuers and acquirers weekend and holiday settlement, including onchain settlement in regulated stablecoins.

How much does a PSP have to prefund on Friday?

The Friday balance carries Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning until the first wires land, plus a buffer for a spike or a late wire. Take a marketplace that pays out $1.2 million on a typical Saturday, $1 million on Sunday and $500,000 on Monday before 10am. A 30% buffer on that $2.7 million brings the Friday balance to about $3.5 million (illustrative figures; your own peaks will differ).

Labor Day, Memorial Day and the other Monday holidays add a full extra day of payouts to the same Friday wire.

A PSP that leaves the buffer in place all week, to avoid pulling it out on Monday and wiring it back on Thursday, holds $3.5 million that earns little or nothing in an operating account. At the 4.14% 13-week Treasury bill rate of 6 October 2026, the same balance would earn about $145,000 a year. Cross-border payout companies carry the same problem once per corridor, and what cross-border prefunding costs works through it with a calculator.

Can stablecoin payments settle on weekends and outside banking hours?

Yes. A USDC or USDT transfer settles onchain at any hour of any day, and a PSP holding stablecoins can top up a payout partner at 11pm on a Saturday. Visa said on 30 September 2025 that it would launch a stablecoin prefunding pilot for Visa Direct with select partners, with limited availability expected by April 2026.

The local leg still depends on the country. Brazil's Pix runs 24/7, and a partner converting USDC to reais can pay a driver in São Paulo on a Sunday, while a corridor whose local banks close at weekends still waits for Monday. The stablecoin sandwich describes the on-ramp and off-ramp legs on either side of the transfer.

A PSP that pays out in stablecoins skips the local leg entirely. Platforms paying freelancers and sellers abroad can send USDC straight to the recipient's wallet, and the stablecoin payroll explainer covers how employers run it.

Where should the weekend float sit between Friday and Monday?

Upshift is onchain yield infrastructure for fintechs and asset managers with stablecoin balances. A PSP that holds its weekend float in USDC can keep it in a stablecoin vault from Friday to Monday and redeem it when payouts go out. The float is one pool of balances (merchant and user money waiting to be paid), and the PSP picks who earns on it: it can keep the yield, pass a rate on to merchants, or share it minus a fee.

This applies to balances held in stablecoins. Dollars in a bank account held for customers follow the program agreement with the bank, which FBO accounts and stablecoin yield covers. A typical setup on Upshift looks like this:

  • A vault limited to the PSP's own wallets, or a single-depositor vault, opened through the Upshift SDK (@augustdigital/sdk) or API.
  • A Cash band to start: tokenized money market funds next to a USDC buffer.
  • Instant exit up to the vault's USDC buffer for a fee of about 0.2%. Larger withdrawals follow the vault's withdrawal period, 72 hours on most vaults.
  • Tokenized fund positions can leave through Upshift Clear, which pays USDC from a lender-funded pool in the same transaction at an oracle price.
  • A few days to 2 weeks from signed terms to a live vault.

A PSP can also hold tokenized money market funds directly. BUIDL holders can sell shares for USDC around the clock through a Circle smart contract, and Ondo's OUSG mints and redeems instantly 24/7, weekends and bank holidays included, from $5,000. Each fund limits who can hold it, and BUIDL and OUSG are for qualified purchasers.

Whether a vault's depositors must meet a fund's eligibility rules is a question for counsel (general information, not legal advice). The vault adds a USDC buffer for smaller exits at any hour, up to the buffer's size, share accounting per depositor and the option to add a Core band later on the same integration. It also adds smart contract and oracle risk, and the buffer earns little, which trims the rate. BUIDL vs USYC vs BENJI compares the funds one by one.

What if Sunday's payouts run past the buffer?

A credit line covers the spike without holding a bigger buffer every week. Through the Upshift prime stack, partners can reach a network of institutional lenders, including credit lines for card and payment programs, and an Upshift lending vault can fund a line itself from depositors' stablecoins within limits the policy engine sets onchain. Stablecoin-linked card programs have a further option: Credit Coop funds each day's Visa settlement in stablecoins on the same day it falls due, weekends included (Visa, 8 Sep 2026). A line can be drawn on the Friday before a long weekend and repaid once Monday's wires land. Pricing and terms are agreed per partner. Borrowing against settlement balances walks through the setup, and receivables financing vs stablecoin credit compares it with selling card receivables.

Stripe charges merchants for the same weekend access. Eligible US businesses can take Instant Payouts any day, weekends and holidays included, for a 1.5% fee, and the funds usually land within 30 minutes.

What can go wrong over a weekend?

A stablecoin can trade below $1 for a period, and an off-ramp partner can lose a banking relationship or close for a local holiday. Instant redemption depends on the vault's USDC buffer, and a weekend draw bigger than the buffer waits for the vault's withdrawal period, 72 hours on most vaults. A vault or protocol contract can have a bug.

Upshift's contracts have been through 11 smart contract audits by 6 independent firms, and compliance teams usually run a vault provider review before moving payout float. Vault yields float with the market and aren't guaranteed. Always make sure to do your own research and be aware of the above and any other risks before depositing.

Frequently asked questions

How do PSPs fund weekend payouts when banks are closed?

They put the money in place before Fedwire closes at 7pm Eastern on Friday, or hold it in stablecoins that move on any day. A wire sent on Sunday after 9pm Eastern counts toward Monday's Fedwire business day.

Can stablecoin payments settle on weekends and outside banking hours?

Yes, onchain transfers settle every hour of every day. Visa's stablecoin settlement volume passed a $20 billion annualised run rate in September 2026, more than 15 times the year before. The local payout still runs on the receiving country's own rails.

Best solutions for weekend and holiday liquidity in stablecoin settlement

The main options are Upshift stablecoin vaults with instant redemption up to the USDC buffer, credit lines through the Upshift prime stack, tokenized money market funds with 24/7 USDC exits (BUIDL through Circle, OUSG, USYC), and stablecoin prefunding into a payout partner or, in pilot, Visa Direct. Upshift runs 50+ vaults on more than 30 chains and has held $550M+ in deposits at peak.

Do tokenized money market funds redeem on weekends?

Some do, through USDC contracts that run 24/7. In February 2026 the SEC approved 24/7 trading of WisdomTree's tokenized money market fund at a fixed $1, through a broker-dealer with onchain settlement.

Do RTP and FedNow work on weekends?

Yes, both settle 24/7/365. FedNow raised its network limit from $1 million to $10 million in November 2025, matching RTP's cap.
