A nostro account holds a prefunded balance in each currency a bank or payment company pays out in. Stablecoin settlement swaps most of those balances for one dollar balance that moves on any day.

Researchers at the Bank for International Settlements counted about 20% fewer active correspondent banks in 2018 than in 2011, even as payment values kept rising (BIS Quarterly Review, March 2020). Those banks move money abroad through nostro vostro accounts, where one bank parks money at another in the local currency before any payment can leave. Stablecoin settlement changes the funding step most. The sender holds one balance in USDC or another stablecoin and moves it at any hour through networks such as Circle Payments Network, Ripple Payments, Bridge and BVNK, while J.P. Morgan's Kinexys does the same with a bank deposit token. The local payout, the FX conversion and the compliance checks still run through banks and off-ramp partners.

Stablecoin rails and deposit tokens cut how much money waits in each country. A stablecoin vault earns on the balance that still waits.

Step 1: the sending bank sends a message, and the money follows separately

In correspondent banking the payment instruction and the money travel apart. The sending bank sends a pacs.008 message over Swift (the ISO 20022 replacement for the old MT103, required for cross-border payments since the coexistence period ended on 22 November 2025). That message tells a correspondent abroad to pay someone. The money moves when the correspondent debits an account the sending bank keeps with it. If the two banks have no direct relationship, one or more intermediary banks sit in the chain, each with its own account and fee.

A stablecoin transfer joins the two. The transaction that moves USDC from the sender's wallet to the off-ramp partner's wallet is the settlement, and it carries a reference both sides can see. Payment details that don't fit onchain still travel separately. Invoice numbers, sanctions screening data and Travel Rule information about the sender and recipient go through an API, usually one run by the payout provider or a network such as Circle Payments Network.

Step 2: the correspondent debits a balance that was paid in days earlier

The names come from Italian. A nostro account ("ours") is the sending bank's account at the correspondent, held in the local currency. In the correspondent's books the same account is a vostro account ("yours"). A loro account ("theirs") is a third bank's account at the correspondent, and it rarely comes up outside syndicated loans. Every nostro has to hold enough local currency to cover the payments due before the next top-up lands.

Payment companies run the same setup with payout partners, and it multiplies. Take a company paying $500,000 a day into each of Mexico, the Philippines, India and Nigeria, with 3 days of payouts parked in each country. That's $6M sitting in four currencies before a single payment goes out (the figures are illustrative). Each balance earns whatever the holding bank pays on it. The money is stuck in the corridor that holds it. A surplus in pesos can't cover a shortfall in naira without a wire and an FX trade, and both wait for banks to open. Circle calls this trapped capital. Sizing those buffers, and what they cost at a given rate, is set out in cross-border prefunding.

With stablecoin settlement the company keeps one USDC balance and sends each partner what it needs, when it needs it. The off-ramp partner still holds pesos or naira to pay out of. It can top that buffer up with USDC at any hour, including when local banks are closed.

A dollar to peso payment through a nostro account and through stablecoin settlement Top row, correspondent banking: the sending bank sends a payment message, the correspondent bank in Mexico debits the sending bank nostro account, which was prefunded in pesos, and the beneficiary bank credits the recipient. Money moves on banking days and a prefunded balance waits in every currency. Bottom row, stablecoin settlement: the payment company holds one USDC balance, sends USDC onchain to an off-ramp partner at any hour, the partner converts it to pesos and pays the recipient over SPEI. The USDC balance can sit in a stablecoin vault until it is sent, and the off-ramp partner keeps a local currency buffer. Nostro and vostro (banking days) Sending bank sends pacs.008 message only Correspondent debits the nostro pesos prefunded Beneficiary bank credits recipient after cut-offs Recipient paid in pesos on banking days Stablecoin settlement (any day) Payment company holds one USDC balance in a vault Onchain transfer USDC moves minutes, any hour Off-ramp partner converts to pesos local currency buffer Recipient paid over SPEI local rail hours Green box: where the balance waits. Illustrative US dollar to Mexican peso payment.

Step 3: the payment waits for cut-offs, weekends and every hop in the chain

Bank payment systems run on business days. The Fedwire Funds Service opens 22 hours a day, Monday to Friday, and the Federal Reserve plans to add Sundays and weekday holidays in 2028 or 2029, with Saturdays still closed. Each hop in a correspondent chain adds its own cut-off time and compliance check. The G20 targets 75% of cross-border payments reaching the recipient within an hour by the end of 2027. In October 2025 the Financial Stability Board said satisfactory global progress was unlikely in line with that timetable. Weekend payout options for PSPs sets out how payment companies cover the days Fedwire is closed.

Onchain, the USDC lands in minutes on a Sunday. The slow part moves to the last mile, where the off-ramp partner converts the stablecoin and pays out over a local rail. Mexico's SPEI runs around the clock, and in markets whose local rails close outside banking hours the off-ramp sets the payout time. The flow behind this (fiat in, stablecoin across, local currency out) is covered in the stablecoin sandwich.

Step 4: both sides reconcile the account

Nostro reconciliation is a daily job. The correspondent sends an end-of-day statement (a camt.053 message, or the older MT950), and the sending bank matches every entry against its own ledger. Breaks come from fees deducted along the chain, payments credited a day late and FX conversions at an unexpected rate.

On a stablecoin rail both sides read the same record. Each transfer has a transaction hash showing the amount, the time and both wallet addresses, and it's visible the moment it settles. The company still reconciles the off-ramp leg, since the FX rate and the local payout sit in the partner's systems. Tools for that layer, including routing across several off-ramps, are compared in stablecoin orchestration.

Step 5: compliance, FX and the law stay with regulated parties

Moving the settlement onchain leaves most of the regulated work in place. A licensed partner in each country still converts the stablecoin and pays out, and it screens the sender and recipient against sanctions lists before it does. In the US the GENIUS Act, signed on 18 July 2025, set the federal rules for payment stablecoin issuers. The OCC proposed its implementing rules on 25 February 2026 and Comptroller Gould said in August that it aims to have a final rule out by November 2026. Banks looking at these rails also weigh tokenized deposits vs stablecoins. A token like JPM Coin (launched to institutional clients on 12 November 2025) stays a deposit at the issuing bank. This is general information, not legal advice.

Step 6: earn on the balance that still waits

Stablecoin settlement shrinks the money parked abroad, and a working balance of USDC remains with the sender. A payment company keeps one to fund the next top-ups, cover a holiday peak or switch to a second off-ramp if the first one fails.

That balance can sit in a stablecoin vault between payouts. Upshift is onchain yield infrastructure that lets fintechs and asset managers offer yield inside their own products, from 24/7 tokenized money market funds to DeFi strategies. A payment company usually starts in the Cash band, where the vault holds tokenized money market funds and earns close to the T-bill rate (rates move daily and aren't guaranteed). Most Upshift vaults have a 72-hour withdrawal period, with instant exit up to the vault's USDC buffer for a fee of about 0.2%. A company can also run a vault limited to its own allow-listed wallets. That keeps its float out of a shared exit queue, as set out in segregated vs co-mingled vault accounts. For peaks, the Upshift prime stack gives partners access to institutional lenders, and borrowing against settlement balances walks through how a credit line sits next to the float.

A stablecoin can trade below $1 for a period, an off-ramp partner can lose its banking access, a vault contract can have a bug, and a large withdrawal may wait for liquidity. Upshift's contracts have been through 11 smart contract audits by 6 independent firms, and a compliance team will usually run a vault provider review before moving settlement balances. Always make sure to do your own research and be aware of the above and any other risks before depositing.

Payment companies holding USDC between payouts can see how the setup works on the payments and card float page.

Frequently asked questions

Nostro vostro accounts vs stablecoin settlement: what changes?

The funding step changes most. A nostro holds days of payouts in each currency and gets topped up by wire on banking days. A stablecoin balance reaches a payout partner in minutes, Sundays included. FX, sanctions screening and the local payout still run through licensed partners.

What is the difference between a nostro and a vostro account?

They're the same account seen from two sides. The bank that owns the money calls it its nostro, and the bank holding it calls it a vostro. A US bank's peso account at a Mexican bank is a nostro in New York and a vostro in Mexico City.

Do banks still need nostro accounts if they settle in stablecoins?

Usually yes, for currencies and partners outside the stablecoin network. Settlement members of Circle Payments Network or J.P. Morgan's JPMD clients can settle with each other without one, while payouts into local bank accounts still need a partner holding local currency.

Can stablecoin settlement replace correspondent banking?

For the cross-border leg between two parties that both accept a stablecoin, it can. The last mile into a local bank account still runs on the country's payment rails and that bank's hours.

How does stablecoin settlement change nostro reconciliation?

Each onchain transfer carries a transaction hash with the amount, the time and both wallets, visible to both sides as it settles. End-of-day camt.053 statements drop out for that leg, and the off-ramp's FX and payout records are reconciled separately.

Can a payment company earn yield on stablecoin settlement balances?

Yes, on the USDC it holds between payouts. A Cash stablecoin vault holding tokenized money market funds earns close to the T-bill rate, with a 72-hour withdrawal period on most Upshift vaults and instant exit up to the vault's USDC buffer for a fee.
